Make+Take: Buttonhole Books

Let’s Make+Take!—Interested in handmade books but unsure where to start? In this workshop, you will learn some introductory book binding skills and create your very own Buttonhole Paper Book using cardstock paper, some waxed thread, and a sewing needle. These journals require no adhesive and make the perfect gift for a loved one … or yourself! Registration includes all materials such as cardstock, paper, and waxed thread. Level: Beginner – no previous experience necessary Registration closes October 15, 2026 and includes all materials. In addition, you may want to bring the following items for class: (optional) A personal apron (we’ll have extras) and/or wear clothes that can get messy (optional) A notebook or sketchbook for note taking (optional) Any personal bookbinding tools you’d like to use instead of the class set: bonefolder, Xacto knife, awl, ruler, bookbinding needles MEET YOUR INSTRUCTOR: Krista Sharp, a native Oklahoman and a member of the Cherokee Nation, has lived and worked in the Washington, D.C. area for over 23 years. She is a book artist and an award-winning graphic and web designer currently working at the Smithsonian Institution. In 2016, Krista graduated from Corcoran School of Art and Design with a Master of Arts degree in Art and the Book. Her book and print work uses multiple printmaking processes and explores unique structural elements. Krista’s art can be seen in many collections and institutions across the country including the Art Institute of Chicago’s Flaxman Library, the Bainbridge Island Museum of Art, and the Smithsonian’s Dibner Library.
