About this event
In the Makerspace. The Japanese Rice Bag (Komebukuro) is proof that the best projects are the ones that work hard and look beautiful. Historically made from fabric scraps stitched into patchwork and used to carry rice and offerings to temples, these bags are adaptable, reversible, and require minimal sewing skills. That means they are perfect for sewists at every level. In this hands-on class, you will start with simple fabric and leave with a useful, customizable bag you can actually use. Want to work with plain fabrics? Piece them together? Add embellishments? Mix it all together? Instructors Shannon and Jason will show you every approach and help you adjust the template to fit your exact needs. You will learn: Measuring and cutting fabric Adjusting the template to suit your project Tips for perfect square corners Easy Y seams Using interfacing and stabilizer Drawstring and handle options And of course, sewing the whole thing together Just show up and stitch. The Federal Way Makerspace is fully stocked with sewing machines and all the tools you will need, and we are providing the kits and materials. You will even take home your own pattern template, and S&J will teach you how to resize it to whatever size you desire. With the holidays just around the corner, the timing could not be better. These bags make wonderful handmade gifts, and once you make one, we are sure you will want to stitch up a whole batch for the makers and dreamers on your list. No experience necessary, but attending a sewing machine intro is required if you have never used a sewing machine before. Just bring your curiosity and a willingness to embrace a little creative chaos. A few additional spots may be available if you bring your own sewing machine.
