The quartet’s ethereal opening gives way to characters both playful and sorrowful, providing comfort to the listener while also steering them down an unexpected road. Structured in a five-movement ‘arch-form,’ Bartók’s String Quartet No. 4 (1928) reaches its emotional apex in the third movement’s nighttime lament.
