About this event
Bound Together: The Journey of a Southern Family from Slavery and the Civil War through Reconstruction and the Lost Cause Presented by Stuart Taylor Taylor writes about his own family’s story to explore a complex and nuanced history of the Civil War, and Reconstruction. Join us as we hear about this history from primary accounts by the author’s ancestor (his grandfather’s uncle), John Hard on the front lines; John’s teen-aged sister Emma on the home front; and Aleck, whom the family held in slavery. Navigating issues of race and memory, Taylor delivers an unflinching portrait of the American South in the crucible of our identifying moment as a region and a nation and helps us understand what our complex history means. Born in Greenville, South Carolina, the author is a retired Presbyterian minister. Educated at Wake Forest University and Princeton Seminary. A longtime peace and justice activist, he has worked on Central America solidarity, immigration reform, watershed stewardship, and racial justice. He is the author of Retracing the Keowee Trail: A Deep Map of the Cherokee Path in the History of the Carolinas. He lives in Elkin, NC. Lunchbox Learning is generously sponsored by:
