Lud-in-the-Mist: A Work-in-Progress Sharing

KEVIN RAY | WORKS presents a work-in-progress sharing of a theatrical adaptation of Hope Mirrlees’s 1926 high fantasy novel, Lud-in-the-Mist. Widely regarded as “the single most beautiful and unjustifiably forgotten novel of the twentieth century,” Lud-in-the-Mist follows the orderly merchant city of Lud, where the ruling class has banned “Faerie Fruit”—a mysterious substance that unleashes ecstatic passion and artistic inspiration. When the fruit is smuggled into the city and elite children begin to succumb to its effects, the mayor must confront what his culture has exiled in order to maintain its carefully ordered world. This event will be roughly 45 minutes of material followed by an open conversation about the development process. KEVIN RAY | WORKS develops and produces design-forward adaptations of under-acknowledged literature. Past productions have included Unearthly Visitants (2021), an adaptation of ghost stories by Edith Wharton; The Machine Stops (2023), based on E.M. Forster’s only science-fiction story; and We (2024), based on the banned dystopian novel by Russian author Yevgeny Zamyatin. LUD-IN-THE-MIST is made possible by the New York State Council on the Arts with the support of the Office of the Governor and the New York State Legislature and is also supported by FAIR in the Arts.
