NOTE: THIS IS AN ON YOUR OWN EVENT. THERE WILL BE NO OFFICIAL HOST. One of our members, Julia, is a member of this group. Below is her description of the event: As a member of the New Wave Singers, I am excited about this project that is challenging, inspiring, and educational, with roots in Baltimore history, civil rights history, spirituality, LGTBQ+ history, and more. Really - all of that and singing! Last year, the New Wave Singers joined 12 other LGTBQ+ choruses to commission a new work, Sincerely Yours, Pauli Murray – a 10 movement cantata - choruses, narration, and solos. We are planning an educational program to share more about Pauli Murray’s amazing legacy. The chorus will present this work with professional soloists and musicians, June 6 and 7, 2026 at Grace United Methodist Church on North Charles Street. Rev. Dr. Murray was born in Baltimore in 1910 and grew up in North Carolina. Among other achievements Rev. Murray was the first African American female ordained Episcopal priest. She continued her advocacy for justice from the pulpit after a career as a legal scholar and civil rights activist. Her legal research contributed to Thurgood Marshalls' work in Brown V. Board. She coined the term "Jane Crow,” and was a founder of NOW. Dr. Murray did not accept traditional concepts of gender, and today may have identified as non-binary or transgender. Dr. Murray is someone whose history and contributions should be more widely known. Early in this journey I said to myself - How have I not heard of this amazing person? If that’s you, too, please make plans to come to the concerts June 6 and June 7. If you know of Dr. Murray’s place in history, you know her story is more important than ever.
