Even fewer leave a legacy that marks them as a truly special, once-in-a-lifetime band. And no band has done all that while having as much fun as Leftover Salmon. From their earliest days as a forward-thinking, progressive bluegrass band that had the guts to add drums to the mix and was unafraid to stir any number of highly combustible styles into its ever-evolving sound, to their role as pioneers of the modern jam-band scene, to their current status as elder statesmen who cast a hugely influential shadow over every festival they play, Leftover Salmon has been a crucial link—keeping the traditional music of the past alive while pushing it forward with a uniquely unconventional style. The band now features a lineup that has been together longer than any other in Salmon history—and it is one of the strongest the legendary band has ever assembled. Built around founding members Drew Emmitt and Vince Herman, the band is powered by banjo whiz Andy Thorn and driven by the steady rhythm section of bassist Greg Garrison, drummer Alwyn Robinson, and dobro player and keyboardist Jay Starling. The current lineup continues Salmon’s long, storied history. The band first emerged from the progressive bluegrass world and came of age as one of the original jam bands before becoming architects of what is now known as jamgrass. Along the way, they helped create a landscape where bands schooled in the traditional rules of bluegrass could break free through nontraditional instrumentation and an innate ability to push songs in new psychedelic directions during live performances.
