Lecture Talk : Cultural Snapshots and Cultural Transmission of Bias

Researchers have long argued that culture plays a role in shaping and creating individual biases. But how do we examine how culture transmits bias to and among individual minds? This talk presents cultural snapshots as a methodology uniquely suited to (a) capture the cultural patterns typically encountered by individuals in their natural ecologies and (b) examine how perceiving those patterns—in their natural ecologies—influences individuals. I will present an introduction to the cultural snapshots method and its theoretical background, and focus on recent work that has used this approach to demonstrate how cultural patterns of nonverbal behavior in popular children’s television contribute to the cultural transmission of bias and the erosion of U.S. children’s interracial relationships in middle childhood. Kristin Pauker is a Professor of Psychology at the University of Hawai‘i and director of the ISP lab. Her work explores how environments and culturally-shaped theories about race impact basic social perception, social interactions, and stereotyping in childhood and throughout development.
