As we continue on our year-long investigation of all things 1776 - We're going to learn about attitudes and treatments of mental illness during Revolutionary times. "Mad" King George refers to King George III of Great Britain and Ireland, who ruled from 1760 to 1820. Best known for losing the American colonies and suffering from bouts of severe mental illness. In 1773, the first hospital in the United States designed solely for the treatment of people living with mental illness was opened in Williamsburg, Virginia.
