Kolshorn Lecture: Tribal Land Management: Balancing social, economic and environmental aspects of stewardship by Dr. Serra J. Hoagland

Each year, the Department of Fisheries, Wildlife and Conservation Biology at the University of Minnesota invites a distinguished scientist or conservationist to campus to give the Kolshorn Lecture. The Kolshorn lecture series was established in 1982 to honor Otto W. Kolshorn. Otto Kolshorn was a farmer, teacher, school board member, and Justice-of-the Peace from Goodhue County, Minnesota, who served 5 terms in the Minnesota House of Representatives. This year’s lecture is by Dr. Serra J. Hoagland, National Program Lead for Tribal Research with the US Forest Service. Dr. Hoagland will speak about tribal land management and the complex process of balancing social, economic and environmental aspects of stewardship. Schedule Doors open at 5:00 pm Light refreshments will be served at 5:15 pm and participants will have the opportunity to visit the temporary exhibition Wild Beauty: The Botanical Art of the Eloise Butler Wildflower Garden Florilegium. About the Speaker Serra J. Hoagland, PhD, National Program Lead, Tribal Research, United States Forest Service Dr. Serra Hoagland (Laguna Pueblo) works for the USDA Forest Service Research & Development branch as the National Program Lead for Tribal Research. As the first Native American to graduate from Northern Arizona University with a PhD in forestry, Dr. Hoagland studied Mexican spotted owl habitat on tribal and non-tribal lands in south-central New Mexico. She has 10 book publications, more than three dozen peer-reviewed journal articles and was nominated as a Fellow for The Wildlife Society in 2023. In 2020, Dr. Hoagland was nominated for a professional of the year award and was selected as the most promising scientist by the American Indian Science & Engineering Society.
