Dr. Marlow-McCowin will present on the moment that sparked his nearly two decades of research into rural Black men in higher education: the gap between academic research and what is actually needed. He will discuss why he chose to write for a general audience, then give an overview of the Ascender Model and its five pillars, told through real stories from his book, The Ascenders: A College Success Toolkit Inspired by Rural Black Men. Marlow-McCowin is a scholar-practitioner, author, and educator based in the Southern Finger Lakes region of New York. He serves as the community development manager with Corning Community Impact and teaches in the Higher Education and Student Affairs graduate program at Binghamton University. His research focuses on rural student success.
