Through three axes—song, battle, and dance—, the repertoire explores how music served as a tool of faith, resistance, and survival during seven centuries of global transformations. Formed in Basel Switzerland in 1974, Hespèrion XXI’s vast repertoire spans the music of the Sephardic Jews, Elizabethan England, the Spanish Golden Age and “Europa de les Nacions.” The ensemble has produced more than 60 recordings and has toured the globe, appearing regularly at the great international festivals of early music.”Hesperion” is derived from a classical Greek word referring to the people of the Italian and Iberian peninsulas, and XXI refers to the 21st Century.
