On Sunday, September 13, 2026, at 3:00 PM, world-renowned recorder virtuoso Jeffrey R. Wahl brings his international artistry home to the historic ballroom of the Phelps Mansion Museum. Accompanied by celebrated Binghamton pianist John Isenberg, Wahl will guide the audience through four centuries of music. The program is designed to shatter the modern “classroom” perception of the recorder, moving from haunting 17th-century variations by Jacob van Eyck to the high-energy, jazz-infused crossover sounds of Claude Bolling. “The recorder is an instrument of astonishing range, yet it is often misunderstood,” says Wahl. “This program takes the listener on a journey from the 1600s to the present day. Performing in a setting as historically rich as the Phelps Mansion allows this music to resonate in its intended atmosphere.” The afternoon’s highlights include Richard Harvey’s formidable Concerto Incantato, showcasing multiple members of the recorder family from the piercing Sopranino to the haunting Tenor, alongside Peter Hope’s Sonata.
