On the first day, we will learn sekkazome, a traditional dying method to create bright, kaleidoscopic patterns on paper. Also known as orizomegami, this fun and colorful technique can be done at your dining table with a minimum of materials and equipment. On the second day of class, we will use our own sekkazome papers as covers for elegant Japanese-style books. We will make the four variations of these traditional sewn book structures and learn about the history and unique qualities of this binding style.
