September 2: “Kaguya-hime” and Otsukimi Kakejiku The night of the harvest full moon, or Jugoya, falls on September 25 this year. Considered one of the most beautiful moons of the year, the “Mid-Autumn Moon” is celebrated in Japan through otsukimi (moon viewing), a tradition of giving thanks for the harvest and wishing for good health and prosperity. The moon also holds a special place in Japanese folklore. Join us for a kamishibai storytelling of Kaguya-hime (The Tale of the Bamboo Cutter), one of Japan’s best-known and most beloved folktales. Discover the enchanting story of a mysterious princess found inside a glowing stalk of bamboo—and her extraordinary connection to the moon. After the kamishibai storytelling, create your own Otsukimi Kakejiku (hanging scroll) featuring the autumn moon to take home and enjoy throughout the fall season.
