The sessions unfolded with a sense of spontaneity, capturing performances that feel lived-in and immediate, including a gripping cover of Jon Dee Graham’s “Laredo.” A second cover, Kris Kristofferson’s “Broken Freedom Song,” bookends the album and nods to one of McMurtry’s earliest influences.
