Join the Irondequoit Historical Society and the Irondequoit Public Library on Thursday, October 1st, 2026 as we welcome Jim Memmot, a retired reporter and senior editor at the Democrat and Chronicle. Jim writes a weekly column for the Democrat and Chronicle-since 2010, he has added nearly 700 names to a list of Remarkable Rochesterians! A native of Little Valley, N.Y., and a graduate of Hamilton College and the University of Minnesota, Jim taught English for nine years at St. Lawrence University in Canton, N.Y. He joined the Times-Union in Rochester in 1980 as a report, and went on to be a general assignment reporter, executive city editor and managing editor at the Times Union. Later, he became the managing editor and senior editor at the Democrat and Chronicle. Jim teaches journalism at the University of Rochester and lives in Geneseo with his wife, Cindy Schmitt.
