Introduction to Japanese Woodblock Printmaking

The mokuhanga printmaking process dates back to 17th-century Japanese and employs a wide range of vivid water-based inks. At the onset of the workshop, participants will make a two-color print from prepared blocks using: water-based pigments, kento registration, and pressing with a baren – all unique hallmarks of the mokuhanga (wood print) process. The class will then move into carving and printing an individual design (7 x 10-inch image). Mary will provide thorough demonstrations along the way and give personalized guidance. Students Are Asked To Bring the Following Materials A drawing for a print that can be traced.
