Interwoven: Sounds and Visions from the World's Refugee Camps

This retrospective exhibition of community art and traditional music will be on view at the Yale Institute of Sacred Music’s Miller Hall at 406 Prospect Street, New Haven from October 15 -December 3 on Tuesdays, Wednesdays, and Thursdays from 12 - 4 p.m., except for Thanksgiving week when the ISM is closed. Presented by Artolution, an international community-based public arts, education, and mental health organization that uses creative expression to build connection, resilience, and community. Building on the acclaimed exhibition Interwoven: Exchange Artworks Made Between Refugee Camps Around the World, originally launched at the United Nations, this expanded presentation hosted at the ISM brings together large-scale collaborative artworks, video documentation of traditional folkloric musicians, and cultural artifacts created by displaced communities across five continents. The exhibition creates a dialogue between visual art and music in contexts of displacement and crisis. Alongside the artworks, visitors encounter videos of musicians from the same communities, offering an opportunity to experience not only the remarkable stories behind the works, but also the sounds, movements, languages, rhythms, and creative traditions of the people who made them. Together, these works offer a powerful portrait of communities using art, music, and cultural expression to preserve identity, share their stories, and create connections across borders.
