About this event

Maine celebrates Indigenous Peoples Day on Monday, October 12. We will participate in this by walking along the Presumpscot River in Westbrook from Saccarappa Park to the [Chief Polin Memorial](https://indianconnections.org/2018/10/01/chief-polin-who-championed-saving-the-presumpscot-river-honored-in-westbrook-with-memorial/) and back. This is an easy one-mile walk on trails and sidewalks with less than 50 feet elevation gain. Chief Polin of the Abenaki people protested the damming of the river in the 1700s by colonists. Join us to learn one of the most important stories of our native Americans here around Portland. Along the way we will comment on the dam removal that occurred in 2019.
