John Carpenter’s metacinematic tribute to the nightmarish underworlds of H. P. Lovecraft stars Sam Neill as a John Trent, a mild-mannered insurance investigator who gradually descends into hysteria while seeking the whereabouts Sutter Cane, a Lovecraft-esque cult writer who has gone missing. Upon arriving in a small New England town, Trent begins to realize that he may be caught within one of Cane’s stories, which only grows more nightmarish and sinister as he encounters surreal phenomena. The practical creature effects recall Lovecraft’s imagery while maintaining a sense of sly Carpenter humor that skirts the absurd. Aptly, a significant cult following has grown around In the Mouth of Madness in the decades since its release, and Neill’s unfettered portrayal of insanity has much to do with its beloved horror status.
