Immigration & Fragile Borders: When does environmental care fail as ethical care?
Environmental border protection, typically considered the purview of left-wingers, finds a political foothold with right-wingers who point to the damage human migration does to the land and animals of the borderlands. While the left wing argues that they care more about the environment, when it comes to the border, the right wing does too. To what extent might these narratives of environmental care and protection offer a path for convergence to push past political polarization? Do these groups care about the same things, in equally justifiable ways? To sort through such questions, philosophy professor Kate Parsons will consider environmental care through the lens of philosophical care ethics. To help think through the extent to which protection of borderlands and their nonhuman inhabitants merit limitations on migration, centering care ethics will prompt us to think not just about whether people care, but also which ethical requirements their care should meet.
