Just in time for Halloween, this month our Spotlight on AI series examines some of the most outlandish, disturbing, and otherworldly claims about the nature and capability of artificial intelligence tools. Are AI models conscious beings? Do they really exhibit “devious” behavior? Are they really developing societies, their own languages, their own social networks? Do they really keep secrets from their users, mislead them on purpose, even hack their way out of their environments? What is Artificial General Intelligence, how close are we really to it, and how godlike can these models become? If – as one popular book has recently proclaimed – anyone builds it, does everybody die? In this easy-to-understand workshop with no prior knowledge necessary, we’ll look at some of the weirdest and downright spookiest claims about AI and try to find our way to the truth.
