About this event

Come join us for some informal philosophical discussion. No prior knowledge or research is required, but an open mind is. Humility is usually considered a virtue, but what exactly does it mean to be humble? Unlike modesty, which is primarily about how we present ourselves to others, humility is about how we see ourselves. But is simply recognizing our imperfections enough to make us humble? We can readily admit that our knowledge is limited, our judgment is fallible, and our character is not perfect. Yet if these admissions don't lead us to question our beliefs, acknowledge our mistakes, or try to become better people, is our humility anything more than an empty declaration? Additionally, excessive humility can become a vice rather than a virtue. Constantly questioning our judgment and dwelling on our shortcomings can undermine our self-confidence and self-esteem. So where should we draw the line? Further discussion questions: Can someone be genuinely humble while knowing that they are exceptionally intelligent, talented, or accomplished? Can humility become an excuse for indecisiveness, passivity, or unwillingness to take responsibility? If you acknowledge that your judgment is fallible but never change your mind about anything, are you genuinely humble? Should humility make us more willing to defer to experts, even when their conclusions seem obviously wrong to us?
