About this event

**What Do We Owe One Another—And What Do We Owe Ourselves?** We live in a culture that swings between two unsatisfying stories. One says that every person is entirely responsible for every success or failure in their life. The other says that people are largely products of systems, trauma, inequality, bad luck, family history, and forces beyond their control. Both stories contain truth. Neither is enough. This week, The Humanist Forum will take on personal responsibility, social responsibility, freedom, justice, accountability, compassion, work, care, and the question of what it means to build a decent life in an unequal society. How do we acknowledge structural barriers without turning people into helpless objects? How do we expect people to grow, contribute, and take responsibility without using shame as a substitute for compassion or public policy? Humanism asks us to hold two ideas at once: people deserve dignity and support, and people are capable of agency, development, and responsibility. We will discuss what we owe to our families, communities, institutions, future generations, and ourselves—and how a society can create genuine opportunity without abandoning standards, effort, or mutual obligation. **ABOUT THE HUMANIST FORUM:** For people who have built careers, lived through hard things, care about public life, and miss having serious conversations: The Humanist Forum is a weekly Thursday-night gathering on philosophy, psychology, religion, politics, science, ethics, art, and the work of building a meaningful life in a difficult world. If you are tired of small talk, doomscrolling, and ideological food fights—but still want to think seriously about the world—come to The Humanist Forum. Every Thursday night, we take on one big question about power, meaning, freedom, identity, relationships, science, religion, democracy, art, and the human condition. You will leave with something to think about, something to feel, and someone new to talk to.
