**Whose Freedom Counts? Liberty, Equality, and the Fight for a Pluralistic Society** “Freedom” may be the value Americans most readily name as a source of national pride. But the word often becomes a slogan before we ask the harder question: freedom for whom, from what, and at whose expense? This week, The Humanist Forum will explore the tension between civil liberties and civil rights, free speech and equal dignity, religious liberty and public equality, individual conscience and social responsibility. In a pluralistic democracy, people must be free to believe, speak, worship, dissent, organize, and live according to deeply held convictions. But a free society also has to ask whether some people’s power, prejudice, or “freedom” can limit another person’s ability to live openly and safely. This will not be a simplistic conversation about censorship or political correctness. It is an invitation to wrestle with the difficult constitutional and moral questions: When does tolerance become complicity? How do we defend broad liberty without making equality conditional? How do we protect dissent while refusing to normalize dehumanization? The Humanist position is not that disagreement should disappear.
