How do we develop ethical principles?

I identify the two fundamental components of ethics theory [Human Life, fig. 5.2]: A theory of human nature A theory of how to skillfully realize human nature in relations with other people Drawing on chapter 1, in which I explain the high-level goals of human nature, I state the following: An ethics theory is a theory for relating to other people in skillfully achieving the high-level goals of human nature — goals to achieve human welfare. [Human Life, fig. 5.3] In this context, I present a theory of human rights, which is based on the concept of personhood. Building on human rights, I note that the structure of civilization is necessarily based on procreation. Procreation, in turn, is optimally based on marriage between a man and a woman who procreate and who provide a loving home for their children. This has been the ideal of civilized societies since time immemorial, and most of us have been blessed with being born into such a family. This conceptual foundation for civilization provides the foundation for developing ethical principles: Ethical principles are principles for skillfully achieving human welfare based on traditional marriage and family.
