About this event
Recognized as the “mother of African American journalism,” Frances Ellen Watkins Harper wrote influential 19th-century abolitionist pieces that shaped debate on race, gender, intersectionality and citizenship. Through her literary work and correspondence in the Black press, she built a political voice for African Americans—especially women. Her journalism bolstered her far-reaching impact as an activist and traveling orator; indeed, few states were left untouched by her courageous voice. View published works by Harper along with historic anti-slavery ephemera from the African American Department collection that reflect the powerful context of her work.
