Dr. Funmi Apantaku Onayemi draws upon more than three decades of distinguished service as a researcher, community health leader, and breast cancer survivor to present a clear, evidence‑based understanding of breast cancer. In her presentation, she systematically addresses and dispels longstanding misconceptions that have contributed to pervasive and debilitating fear that has led to preventable mortality among women. Her insights, supported by current data, highlighting significant advancements in breast cancer detection, treatment, and survivorship, offers both clarity and assurance. As women are equipped with accurate information and informed by encouraging survival outcomes, fear is replaced with knowledge, confidence, and renewed hope. Dr. Funmi Apantaku‑Onayemi is a distinguished public health leader with more than thirty years of expertise in population studies, community engagement, and participatory cancer research focused on minority populations, including her tenure as Midwest Regional Director for the National Cancer Institute’s National Black Leadership Initiative on Cancer. She has established influential coalitions across twelve Midwestern states, authored award‑winning and nationally recognized cancer control programs and delivered presentations at prominent venues including a Congressional Hearing on Capitol Hill. Her leadership in major research initiatives—most notably recruiting 12,000 Black women for a landmark breast cancer cultural‑beliefs study—along with her advisory roles, national committee work, and continued academic service at the University of Illinois Chicago, reflect a career of exceptional impact and authority in cancer disparities and survivorship.
