Homeschool Naturalists: Hooked on Fishing

Join us at Douthat State Park for Homeschool Naturalists, a monthly outdoor education series designed for homeschool students of all ages. Each session explores a different nature-based topic through hands-on activities, guided discovery, and time in the great outdoors. This session of Homeschool Naturalist is Hooked on Fishing. We’ll start on land by getting familiar with rods, reels, and their ‘fin-tastic’ parts, then play a fun casting game to test your aim. You’ll also learn two essential fishing knots and how to rig your line like a pro. After that, we’ll head to the creek or lake to try and catch the big one, or at least something with fins. For your younger homeschool students, we will have a fish printing craft for them to do instead of fishing. We have limited fishing poles so feel free to bring your own. Participants ages 16 and up must have a valid Virginia freshwater fishing license, which can be purchased at the park office, camp store, or online HERE. October 7: All About Bats November 4: Fur, Tracks, and Scat March 3: Terrific Trees April 7: Reptile Rangers May 5: Insect Detectives Programs run from 10:30 a.m. to 12:30 p.m. Please meet at the Discovery Center. This is a family-friendly program; parents or guardians must stay with their children. Please dress for the weather and be prepared for outdoor conditions. This is a rain or shine event.
