About this event

The Curious Case of Gina Kelly Presented by Lauren E. Hunley, Community Historian, Western Heritage Center Nov. 19, 2026 @ Noon Western Heritage Center Sponsored by Michelle & Conrad Caron In October 1926, Georgina Kelly exited the Montana State Supreme Court in Helena victorious. After more than two years of court battles, news reports, and personal scrutiny, Forsyth resident Kelly was awarded $8,000 in damages for being kidnapped, transported, and falsely imprisoned by Warm Springs superintendent, Dr. R.J. Hathaway and her ex-husband, John Kelly. After years of false imprisonment in Minnesota and Wisconsin, a harrowing trip across Montana, and even non-consensual surgeries, Mrs. Kelly’s experiences reflect the legal, medical, and women’s history in Forsyth, Warm Springs, and elsewhere across Montana. This presentation will place them within their local, state, and national contexts. Her story, reported heavily in state newspapers, not only impacted the social histories of the localities where it took place, but it directly shaped the future of Montana politics and public health investigations. Through her insistence on justice, Kelly exposed local banking and legal issues, illegal eugenics practices at the Montana State Hospital, and brought the governor’s office into question. While the impacts of her bravery can be seen today, her story has been forgotten. It’s time to reintroduce her to Montana History. Regular Admission Rates Apply
