Hide Camp: Traditional Deer Hide Tanning November 4, 6–8, 2026 20 hours of hands-on instruction All tools and materials will be provided, including hides and brains. Registration Required: click here to register. Register once and get all four days. Learn the traditional art of brain tanning deer hides in this four-day workshop. Whether you’re new to hide tanning or looking to deepen your skills, you’ll work through each stage of the process with plenty of hands-on practice and individualized instruction. Throughout the workshop, participants will learn how to transform a deer hide into soft, durable buckskin. Topics include hide preparation, fleshing, wet and dry scraping techniques, brain tanning (with discussion of egg tanning as an alternative), wringing, softening, and smoking. Instructors will also demonstrate hide salting and preservation techniques so you’ll understand how to prepare hides for future tanning projects. Everyone will have the opportunity to work closely with instructors, ask questions, and gain confidence in each step of the process. Schedule* Wednesday, November 4: 4:00–8:00 p.m. Friday, November 6: 3:00–7:00 p.m. Saturday, November 7: 9:00 a.m.–3:00 p.m. Sunday, November 8: 9:00 a.m.–3:00 p.m. *This schedule is made with flexibility in mind. Anticipate attending for as many hours as you are able, but please don’t worry about late starts if there is work interference. Total Instruction Time: 20 hours Cost $200 per participant Meals Everyday – Light snacks and beverages. Thursday – Sandwiches provided. Friday – Bring your own dinner. Saturday – Potluck-style lunch.
