The tour is free with donations warmly accepted at the end via cash, venmo or zelle. DESCRIPTION: This is one of my favorite tours for New York history, architecture and New York stories! Join us before the tour for a free Carnegie Hall Community Concert from 6pm - 7pm at Madison Square Park. Note: For this event the live music is before the tour so technically optional but highly recommended. TOUR OVERVIEW En route to Gramercy Park, we'll see some of the spectacular architecture of the Ladies Mile Historic District along with Theodore Roosevelt's birthplace. At Gramercy Park, one of NYC's first planned neighborhoods in the 1830s, we'll learn about the actor Edwin Booth, who founded The Players Club (and brother of the Lincoln's assassin John Wilkes Booth), and the see the former mansion of NY State Governor Samuel J. Tilden. Tilden has figured prominently in history not only as because he helped establish the NY Public Library but as a candidate for President in whose election defeat in 1876 is perhaps the most controversial in American History. As we stroll towards Union Square, we'll visit the street known as "Block Beautiful" and pass by one of NYC's oldest taverns from the 1860s. For the grand finale we'll end back at Madison Square to learn about the iconic buildings there, including the Flatiron Building, Metropolitan Life Tower, and the New York Life building which occupies the site of the original building known as Madison Square Garden. The park itself has an interesting history that includes the story of a famous architect who was murdered inside one of his creations. SCHEDULE: 4:45pm - 5:45pm: Optional Happy Hour at John Doe Craft Bar and Kitchen, 28th Street & 5th Avenue. **If you would like to meet as a group before the musicβ¦
