About this event

Humans have been using the most basic of tools— their hands— to work with clay for tens of thousands of years. Long before the invention of the pottery wheel and continuing throughout history, we have explored clay through hand-building techniques and created expressive and challenging forms. This course seeks to continue that tradition, introducing you to basic and advanced hand-building techniques including pinching, coiling, solid clay modeling, and slab building to create forms both utilitarian and expressive. You will work through these fundamental techniques for hand-building forms from clay. Ceramics is all about timing; Using the right technique at the right time can lead to great success with whatever you choose to make. Sign up to understand timing with clay, specifically when it is best to bend or stretch a slab, join pieces together, refine the shape, and when to apply decorative stamping and engobes to the surface. Class Fee: $245 Early bird Discount is available through May 18. Our class is designed for adult participation. Please call before enrolling students 13 and under. Class includes: Up to 25 pounds of clay, glazes, and firing. Extra clay firing package is available for purchase. 12 hours of community studio time that is valid through your class semester. Extra studio time is available for purchase. Students will supply their own basic pottery tool kit, available for purchase from our tool shop for $24.99 plus tax. Photo credit: Shellie Miller
