We the People of the United States, in Order to form a more perfect Union . . . ” So begins the foundational document of our government – the Constitution. It can be argued that no one did as much to create this new nation of states unified under an effective national government than George Washington. As the defining Founding Father, his name and legacy have been used to support the ideologies and actions of subsequent generations. This was especially true in the decades leading to our nation’s second Revolution – the Civil War. Both the Union and Confederacy claimed Washington’s legacy. In partnership with George Washington’s Mount Vernon, the George Washington Teachers Institute 250, and Boeing, the Atlanta History Center is hosting a full-day seminar examining Mount Vernon and AHC resources. Participants will explore the evolution of Washington’s view and actions concerning enslavement, his belief in the Union of states under a strong national government, the vast virtual and in-person opportunities of Mount Vernon, and how to use artifacts in the classroom. Attendees will also participate in guided and independent tours of AHC exhibits as they learn how to use place to teach history.
