About this event

This fall from Oct. 3-13, Alabama’s waterways become the ultimate playground for 28 elite paddlers from across North America and Europe. They are taking on the 8th annual Great Alabama 650, a 650-mile race that pushes endurance to the max. Starting October 3 at Weiss Lake, racers will paddle through rushing whitewater, around nine dams, and down six rivers to Mobile Bay. Along the way, you can cheer them on from riverbanks in Gadsden, Pell City, Wetumpka, Montgomery, Selma, Fairhope, and more. The first boat should be seen in Gadsden around 7:30pm. The course follows the Alabama Scenic River Trail, the nation’s longest National Water Trail, stretching from the Appalachian foothills to the Gulf of Mexico. Racers have 10 days to finish and claim top honors in one of three divisions: male solo, female solo, or two-person tandem team. Any paddle craft goes: kayak, canoe, even stand-up paddleboard.
