Geology Hike to Dinosaur Tracks in Red Rock Canyon
We are going to do a slow-paced strenuous hike to perhaps the most important paleontological site in Southern Nevada. The destination, near Pine Creek in Red Rock Canyon, is a block of 180-million year old Jurassic Aztec Sandstone with both dinosaur and proto-mammal trackways side-by-side. The site is described on pages 89-91 in my book on the geology of Red Rock Canyon (available on Amazon). The hike is a total of 3 miles, with about 400 ft of elevation gain, including some steep slopes and no trail for the last 1/2 mile. We are meeting in the Pine Creek parking lot, and stepping off at 0830. If you get to the fee booth before 0800 no reservation is necessary. Bring your senior pass or pay $20 per car. Bring hiking gear, water, and a snack or light lunch.
