General Society of Mayflower Descendants In 1620, a brave group of 102 men, women, and children sailed across the Atlantic on the Mayflower in search of a better life. Forty-five of these passengers died in the harsh winter of 1620–21. The General Society of Mayflower Descendants was established in 1897 to pay homage to the Pilgrims. The Society estimates that there may be as many as 10 million living descendants in the United States and 35 million living descendants of the Mayflower worldwide. The Florida Society was chartered in 1937. There are now 17 colonies throughout the state, including the John Alden Colony of Fort Lauderdale established in 1949.
