Forum Series: Walls, Windows, and Women Artists

As we anticipate our buildings’ 150th anniversary (on February 9, 2027), these Forums will take a closer look at the extraordinary art that surrounds us each time we gather for worship—art that has helped to shape, inform, and inspire our faith for generations. Led by Cynthia Staples (Trinity Church Historian), Keith Morgan (Professor Emeritus of History of Art and Architecture at Boston University), and Peter Smiledge (Trinity Tour Guide and Vestry member), this three-part series will explore the remarkable artists and artisans whose vision and craftsmanship created our magnificent worship space. October 4 — The Walls Keith Morgan will discuss the groundbreaking mural work of John La Farge, whose innovative artistic vision helped transform Trinity Church into one of America’s great architectural and artistic treasures. October 11 — The Windows Peter Smiledge will explore Trinity’s renowned collection of stained glass, tracing the remarkable nineteenth-century revival of this ancient art form and the artists who helped bring new life and brilliance to the medium. October 18 — The Women Cynthia Staples will share the stories of the women whose artistry has enriched Trinity Church’s interior—from its walls to its windows and even its floors. Their work, creativity, and contributions are an important part of the story of the church we know and love today.
