Filles et Pères (Daughters and Fathers) is a band steeped in the soul of traditional Cajun music, featuring Renée Reed, Amelia Powell, Mitch Reed, and Dirk Powell. Renée and Amelia (the daughters) both come from a long line of musicians, each with a grandfather (Bob Reed and Dewey Balfa) who grew up championing the hardcore Mamou sound. Renée is known for her group The Holiday Playgirls as well as her evocative original music, and Amelia, known for her rock-solid guitar playing, has recently toured the world as a full-time member of Rhiannon Giddens’ band. Mitch Reed and Dirk Powell (the fathers) have made music together since the 1990s, in groups like Balfa Toujours and others. Mitch is known as a direct and one-of-a-kind inheritor of the deepest Cajun fiddle traditions, and Dirk has a reputation as a “musician’s musician” in a career that has found him playing with Joan Baez, Eric Clapton, and others. Together, they share a special familial energy that is unique on today’s musical landscape. Come rock to tunes new and old, and get a fix of some sounds that tap into the deep, expressive, and uncontainable roots of Cajun music.
