Field Trip into the Salt Marsh
Did you know that horseshoe crabs have been around longer than the dinosaurs – and have survived more than one major extinction event? We invited you to join naturalist Sarah Gladu at Coastal Rivers’ Salt Bay Farm for a field trip into the salt marsh to search for horseshoe crabs, mummichogs, and marine worms. We’ll explore the spartina grasses and a salt marsh creek as we look for horseshoe crab nesting sites. Learn about the history, biology, and behavior of horseshoe crabs, as well as the importance of salt marsh environments along the Maine coast. Open to all ages! Small nets will be provided to aid in our search for salt marsh creatures (all of which will be gently released). Comfortable walking shoes recommended. Boots or wading shoes are ideal if you wish to wade, though they are not necessary. To the marsh and back will be about a 1/2 mile walk on fairly flat mown trails through hayfields. Weather contingencies: There is no rain date scheduled for this event; we’ll cancel only in the event of severe weather. If there are any changes, we’ll send an email to those who are registered.
