Having already helped revolutionize the art of cinema with the German expressionist masterworks Nosferatu and The Last Laugh, F. W. Murnau created the equally astonishing supernatural Faust, adapting the classic German legend of an alchemist who makes a pact with the devil for eternal youth. This magnificent production—Murnau’s final German film before coming to Hollywood and directing Sunrise—is one of the great accomplishments of the legendary Ufa Studios in Berlin, anchored by a diabolical Emil Jannings as Mephisto. The film’s grand designs and special effects include such unforgettable sights as flying banshees and the devil spreading his wings (and the plague) over a small town (imagery that would directly inspire the “Night on Bald Mountain” segment of Disney’s Fantasia). This new restoration of the original German version of the film (with hand-painted intertitles) features a score compiled from historic photoplay music by the Mont Alto Motion Picture Orchestra.
