FALL INTO WINTER: How to Paint the Light and Atmosphere of the changing seasons.

Howard Park & Lisa Miceli This class will explore how to approach the changing colors, weather, and mood of fall and winter. Participants will learn how to overcome the challenges of painting the colorful transformations of fall, including how to interpret the vivid colors in the landscape as they change, as well as the cooler colors of winter, so they fit into the design, composition, and proper value and color scheme of a painting. The class will focus on balancing color and light effects by understanding the source of light and the effective use of values. Participants will explore the relationship between value and color using sketchbooks and learn how to use lights to make darks. Through demonstrations and individual instruction, participants will learn to design a well-balanced fall-to-winter landscape that captures the beauty of fall’s brilliance and warmth, as well as the changing light as the seasons transition into cooler weather. The class includes instructor demonstrations in oil and watercolor, along with individual instruction. Weather permitting, participants will practice sketching outdoors along the river at MMoA. Students should bring sketchbooks, pencils, charcoal for drawing, and/or pens or markers for sketching. 5-week series Tuesdays, 9am – 12pm October 20 – November 17 Members $240 / Nonmembers $280 Class Supply List Recommended Supply List for Oil or Acrylic Suggested oil paint brands: RGH paints, Rembrandt, Lucas and Gamblin Howard’s limited palette: White: Titanium white, large tubes. Gamblin has a flake white replacement. Zinc white is a cool white with strong tinting qualities but can easily make colors get chalky Black.
