Encaustic and Mixed Media Painting

Join instructor Marcie Wolf-Hubbard for an exciting exploration of encaustic painting! Developed originally by the ancient Greeks, encaustic painting uses a heated wax medium and pigments to create colorful layers that can then be shaped, scraped, inscribed into, and more, to create unique textures in the artwork’s surface. This workshop will cover painting and collage with wax, fusing and carving the medium, as well as how to incorporate personal drawings, papers, prints, and photos into the artwork. Working on wood supports, students will complete their own encaustic paintings with an option of applying pigment sticks to emphasize texture, and walk away with an understanding of how encaustic may be applied to their personal art practice (e.g., printmaking, paper making, etc.). Level: All levels – no previous experience necessary! Registration closes October 11, 2026. Material fees are included with your registration to cover the supplies provided in class. Students will need to gather/purchase additional materials for class (see the materials list below). This list will also be provided with the registration confirmation email. Sample image by Marcie Wolf-Hubbard WORKSHOP SUPPLIES: Registration includes a $45 materials fee to cover consumable materials provided in class, including encaustic medium and paint, pigment sticks, other drawing and incising tools, and various papers. Students will need to supply additional materials of their own, including: 1-2 wood panels (birch or plywood, unprimed) up to 11″ x 14″ (optional) Any scrap and handmade papers you might want to experiment incorporating into your encaustic work.
