Elizabeth Blood: Songs Inside A Beautiful Experience
Thursday, April 2, 2026 6:00-7:00 pm In the A Beautiful Experience: The Midwest Grotto Tradition gallery RSVP with a suggested donation of $10 Sold Out Join an audience of regional grotto site stewards for an intimate one-time-only performance by Wisconsin-based sonic artist and vocalist Elizabeth Blood, who will offer a semi-improvised operatic gallery response in A Beautiful Experience: The Midwest Grotto Tradition exhibition. Drawing compositional approaches from sacred Renaissance polyphony and traditional opera as well as experimental improvisation and extended vocal techniques, while calling inspiration from self-reflection, spiritual growth, and an attuned connection to universal energy, Blood’s work serves as a connecting tissue between the worlds of contemporary DIY ethos, the grottoes of artists like Madeline Buol, and the ancient grottoes that inspired them. For her performance at JMKAC, Elizabeth is developing a multi-movement improvisational work for voice and live electronic looping. The piece moves through full-voiced singing, sprechstimme, and extended techniques such as ingressive vocalizations and vocal fry, building layered soundscapes in real time. Her music unfolds atmospherically, shifting between luminous harmonies and deliberate cacophony, with sparse melodic lines emerging and dissolving within textured loops. Audience members may encounter the work viscerally or meditatively — each experience shaped by their own listening. The performance may also incorporate spoken or melodically improvised narrative inspired by The Interior Castle by Teresa of Ávila, the 16th-century Spanish mystic, weaving contemplative text into the sonic architecture. Wine and light appetizers will be provided between 5:00-6:00 p.m. in the JMKAC CAFE. Note: Food and beverages are not allowed in the galleries. The event is free with a suggested donation of $10.00. Very limited capacity, so reserve your spot today.
