Elder Abuse: Recognizing the Signs and Finding Help

Morrell Meeting Room. This presentation is hosted by the Maine Council for Elder Abuse Prevention. MCEAP’s goal for this presentation is to provide an overview of the issue of elder abuse including statistics, general information about the different types of elder abuse, and where to go for help. This presentation will cover different types of Elder Abuse and the resources that are available to protect those around you if you suspect that they are victims of Elder Abuse. Most scams and cases of elder abuse involve monetary theft in some form. This is true whether it involves getting unsuspecting people to transfer cash, assets, deeds or unknowingly sign documents surrendering control. Cases of elder abuse are particularly insidious because they can also involve psychological and physical abuse, neglect, abandonment and even sexual abuse. Sadly, according to statistics, the largest single group of abusers is family members. Our program will be led by Michele Langstaff. Michele Langstaff spent more than 15 years in the financial services and financial services software industries where she developed a particular interest in the emerging fraud epidemic worldwide. She has been volunteering as a speaker with the AARP Fraud Watch Network for the past few years and has been presenting to groups in both Maine and South Florida.
