About this event
Duo Lancaster—featuring cellist Dr. Claudio Jaffe and Steinway Artist pianist Tao Lin—presents a captivating afternoon of profound masterworks. The program opens with César Franck’s magnificent Sonata in A major. Originally written for violin but idiomatic and breathtaking on the cello, this piece is famous for its soaring cyclic themes, passionate emotional dialogue, and the joyous, triumphant canon of its final movement. The second half features Louis Vierne’s powerful Cello Sonata in B minor, Op. 27. Written during a period of immense personal trial for the composer, who was best known as a titan of French organ music, this sonata is a striking hidden gem. It blends stormy, turbulent dramatic intensity with moments of deeply reflective, haunting lyricism and rich harmonic color. Together, Jaffe and Lin bring these monumental scores to life with technical mastery and profound artistic chemistry. This performance highlights how both composers pushed the boundaries of emotional expression, guiding listeners from the golden, romantic warmth of Franck into the dramatic, soul-stirring depths of Vierne. It is an unforgettable showcase of synergy between cello and piano. No registration required. All ages welcome.
