About this event
This is an every-other-Saturday-night get-together for people who want to have inappropriately serious conversations with strangers. All are welcome and no a priori knowledge of philosophy or anything else is required or expected. There are no fixed topics and no rules other than the categorical imperative to not be assholes to one another. This week's totally optional readings focus on the philosophy of Simone de Beauvoir, feel free to read either, both, or none. 1\. "Introduction: Woman as Other" which is the first part of "The Second Sex" \([https://www.marxists.org/reference/subject/ethics/de-beauvoir/2nd-sex/introduction.htm](https://www.marxists.org/reference/subject/ethics/de-beauvoir/2nd-sex/introduction.htm)). I found it to be the more accessible of the two--a foundational text of feminist philosophy. 2\. "Ambiguity and Freedom" the first part of "The Ethics of Ambiguity" \([https://www.marxists.org/reference/subject/ethics/de-beauvoir/ambiguity/ch01.htm](https://www.marxists.org/reference/subject/ethics/de-beauvoir/ambiguity/ch01.htm)). This is de Beauvoir's treatment of an existentialist ethics. Come meet cranks, fanatics, weirdos and friendly people who actually know a lot about philosophy and other stuff. Melt a hole in the dreaded Seattle Freeze with the power of Big Talk (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=EUbjpwyesk0).
