About this event
Ever wondered how your favorite anime and movie characters are brought to life? In this hands-on illustration workshop, young artists will learn how professionals design dynamic characters, poses, and expressions—just like in Naruto, Demon Slayer, KPop Demon Hunter, and other fan favorites! Students will explore the artistic process behind animation and comics—from concept sketching to finished artwork. They will learn How to break down character anatomy and proportions Practice gesture drawing and expressive poses Build skills in storytelling through design—how to show emotion, movement, and personality in every drawing Students will be guided by WILASC instructor Jesse Lawrence, a professional artist and illustrator with a passion for storytelling through art. A graduate of the Academy of Art University, Jesse has spent over a decade inspiring young artists and helping them discover their creative voice. As part of his study, he had opportunities to learn from makers of animated projects such as Lilo & Stitch (2025), Elemental, Turning Red, KPop Demon Hunter, and more. Jesse is also the creator of his upcoming manga/comic series, Eldritch. Jesse has been teaching and mentoring young artists for over 10 years, leading art clubs at The Book Rack, after-school programs at local public schools, and creative workshops at Oak Harbor’s Senior Center. Whidbey Island Language Art & STEM Center (WILASC) is a multidisciplinary learning center on Whidbey Island offering quality enrichment programs in languages, art, music, and STEM (Science, Technology, Engineering, and Math) for children aged 4 and up.
