Of those many adaptations, none has fascinated our popular culture quite like Bela Lugosi’s timeless interpretation, which celebrates its 95th anniversary this year. After honing his undead act on the Broadway stage, Lugosi brought Dracula to Hollywood and terrified the world with an unsettling combination of menace and charisma that remains definitive. Universal wasn’t done terrifying 1931 audiences. Just a few months after DRACULA took the world by storm, the studio released its haunting adaptation of Mary Shelley’s controversial novel. Dr. Frankenstein, a reclusive scientist increasingly obsessed with his unusual experiments, dares to tamper with life and death by creating a human monster out of lifeless body parts. When a criminal’s brain is inadvertently transplanted inside the creature with potentially dangerous effects, its creators decide that it must be destroyed. Like Lugosi with Dracula, Boris Karloff will forever be associated with this heartbreaking performance as a monster who didn’t ask to be brought back to life.
